Here are your options:

- spray on peroxide/lemon juice mixtures (like Sun-In): these work best on hair that is already blonde and you just want lighter, it will turn brown hair orange (not pretty or natural looking on anything but blonde hair)

- highlights: this is the middle road, the results will look great and the upkeep is not nearly as bad as dying the whole head (you'll need touch ups every 4-6 weeks), this option is also less damaging than dying the whole head, AND when combined with lowlights this option can be the most natural looking, definitely go to a professional the first time you do this

- dyeing all your hair blonde: this is the option with the most upkeep (touch ups needed around every 2 weeks, especially if your natural color is dark), it is the most expensive and the hardest on your hair, you will need a good deep conditioner to keep your hair soft (try Redken All Soft), if your hair is dark you will need to bleach out the current color then dye it the color you want (not a move for first timers)

My advise, go to a stylist for a highlight/lowlight combination.

i dye my hair all the time and i use Clairol Balsam Color #498....it is hard to find #498 but it is the blondest color they make. It is also the cheapest coloring dye i have found that actually works. My hair is naturally dark brown but i am a very light blonde now. It may take some time depending on how dark your hair is now but it is worth the time and effort cause i LOVE being blonde!!!!
