Dress as if you're going to a job interview. It's in very bad taste to wear black unless you're a member of the immediate family of the deceased. Dressing properly shows respect for both the deceased and the family.
I think the commercial you saw was the one about "the color of defiance". The whole idea was that the woman in red was either the mistress or the young wife of the dead man, and she was showing defiance to the whole family, who probably didn't like her, by wearing the red dress. Never wear red to a funeral.

Typically at American funerals, black is the color of choice. However, nowadays, you can use any color that you like. Make your choice on location, family, how well you knew the family, and the type of funeral being presented. If unsure, at most go light accent for colors or darker colors. Red typically represents "joy", but, say for instance it was the person's favorite color, it may be appropriate. Really, its up to you and your taste.

These days it's not a matter of the color you choose to wear. Anything attention-getting like loud patterns and/or colors, suggestive or revealing attire, and casual wear (athletic gear, denim, tee shirts, shorts) are the 3 three things that are unacceptable, inappropriate, and disrespectful to wear to a funeral. It's about the person who has passed away, so your goal is to wear something that won't upstage the deceased and their loved ones in grief.

Depends on the culture. In the US, dark clothes are the accepted norm. But some people buck tradition and where what they want...I heard of someone who died that had liked to where Hawaiian shirts...so some people at his funeral wore them as a tribute. In some areas (I personally think where gang active is more prevalent) people get memorial T-shirts printed up. I think that is a really bad idea, as it keeps people upset about the deaths, particularly if they were violent deaths. But I don't know if they wear them to the funeral or just later.

I saw a commercial where a man turned into a rabbit and humped a can of beer, that does not mean it really happens. You should wear whatever color the society says you should wear, here it is black, wear black, unless you were like the dead dudes mistress, then you should wear red. Thats hot.

Today people will wear most anything to a funeral. It is more respectful to wear something dark. Low cut shirts and short skirts are not really respectful to the family, so dress conservatively. Jeans are generally disrespectful but it is not unusual to see that around here.

Black and Gray and Dark Blue are acceptable colors at a funeral. Red is not and looks terrible and insulting. You are supposed to be there and be respectful not trying to get attention.

i depends on the funeral and the dominant religion...obviously in some Asian countries i think that white is the mourning color...i personally believe that death should be something to celebrate in reflection to the life that lived it...i don't want any black at all...red would best best color...it is traditionally the color of the Gods and of power...plus i like it...my dad wants everyone to wear jeans and a shirt...nothin fancy...yep he's a country boy...lol...imma bury him with a beer in one hand and a joint in the other...lol

It depends on the person who died I would say and where the funeral is at.
I had a friend who passed away some months ago who used to dye his beard rainbow and wore Hawaiian shirts all the time.
At his funeral, I wore black with a splash of color in the shirt to honor him and the catholic church. But at his Memorial with all the friends, I dyed my hair rainbow and wore Hawaiian print clothes.

It's proper to wear dark colors such as brown, black, or maybe navy blue. Improper would be colors such as white, red, purple, and etc. When you go to a funeral you aren't supposed to try to attract attention to yourself. It's considered disrespectful.
