My female Bassett Hound is in heat. I'm guessing that she is whining because she is uncomfortable. Are there any remedies that will make her more comfortable and lessen her whining?

Details:
We just got her - she's three years old - and we'll be having her spayed as soon as possible.

Serious answerers only please. This whining has made me very short tempered. I ask that I receive no smart remarks from the "peanut gallery" - Please.

I should have mentioned that she has been bleeding for two weeks - the heaviest was last week.

She is kept locked in our back yard - with a doggie door for freedom to come into the kitchen for food and water inside. I work at home - so I keep an eagle eye on her!

I take heart at the suggestion that she can be given a sedative. I'll look into that and the spaying tomorrow during business hours.

For those who suggested the use of sex toys - Your ignorance is showing. Please note the answerer that speaks to the hormonal change that is required to end the cycle. That answer is based on knowledge.

I have had female dogs forever and I hate to break it to ya but there ain't much you can do. Short of allowing her to breed there is no lessing the urge, if she was to breed and it "took" that would start a hormone change which would put her "out of heat" .

It takes three weeks to totally go through the cycle and the middle week being the most fertile time and the most whinig as well I am sure. If you have had to go through this for more than a few days feel good that it is on it's way out the door, the most you could have is 3 or 4 more HIGH HORMONE days left.

You should be very careful about letting her get loose, she will be as bad as any boy dog about chasing around..... I have had to go find one of my girls before, cause she went cruising for a boy friend. I was lucky she did not find one and she was fixed ASAP after that.

OH gosh im sorry you are going through that if its anything like a cat in heat its very very annoying. There really isnt anything I know that you can do but just to let nature do its thing unless you want to take her to vet and get her fixed while she is in heat which some vets will do , but they will charge you extra for the operation while they are in heat. They did that with my cat but it got to the point it was annoying and all these cats started to hang out around the house .

Also if your dog likes to sleep on the couch I would put some blankets down or a sheet or wherever she sleeps so you will not get any blood on your furniture .

Just be prepared I believe dogs are in heat from anywhere 2 weeks to 3 weeks . Hang in there or call the vet and get her in that is what I would do . Or like I said just let nature take its course then off to the vet

She's not whining out of pain, but she is just in that temporary state where she is desperate to mate. Its likie female cats yowling when they're in season, they just want to get outdoors and pair up.
If she is outdoors with a dog door then its likely that males will get in, or she will make determined efforts to escape and join them.
It might be a good idea to take her to the vet as soon as possible, discuss the matter with them and get her checked for pyometra while you're there. If she's lethargic and has a temperature then please don't waste any time. She's probably just having a normal season.

I'm so glad that you're going to have her spayed. Although she may have some discomfort, I would have thought that the whining is to get out. Under no circumstances can she go out on her own, as other dogs would regard even an 8 foot electric fence no obstacle in their effort to get to her. She could hear other local dogs on the snoop for her. It must be so hard for your nerves coping at the moment, try to hang on in there, once she's spayed you'll never have to go through this awful business again, you poor thing.

Neutering and spaying is, unfortunately, going to be the only way to correct the problem. When you have a female in heat, every male dog in the building is going to know it and they won't stop going nuts until they've gotten what they wanted. You'll just have to wait it out.

She wants to have a rendezvous with a boy dog. So she's whining to you to let you know she needsss a boy dog! The whining will stop when the heat cycle is over with.

No she's not whining because she's uncomfortable, she is whining because she wants to be out looking for a mate. Dogs are in heat for 21 days so be very careful to not let her out and about unsupervised during this time.

I have a friend that used to give her female dog Clorets, apparently it is supposed to keep the male dogs from smelling her in heat. She had a pure bred Sheppard and didn't want the neighbourhood dogs to get at her. I can't say if it really works but my friend swears by it. Good luck.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tinyurl.im/sBsJO

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.
