That would be tricky because something such as say Saint Johns Wart might be contraindicated when used with a SRI...in fact I know this because Saint John's Wart acts more like a MAOI Inhibitor which should never be mixed with an SRI...I am talking Wellbutrin and Paxil...both Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors...and the other is an older class of drugs that does not mix well together....you need to find out the interactions of natural meds with conventional meds. there are such books and information available on the net and also in health food stores...

There are many things that you can do for your depression if you have the physical ability. You could exercise, or even better take up a sport, or dancing or activity that you can do regularly, either individually with a group. If you are not sure where to start then look at the www.mind website as this will offer you locally run groups to help people to begin social activities and may offer therapy. You can ensure that you get enough sunlight everyday...check the SAD website to see if you have seasonal affective disorder as there is different treatment for this. Why not try seeing a therapist, cognitive behavioural therapy can be effective depending on what causes your depression, although I imagine it would work for most. If your not sure the best professional advice you can get is probably from www.mind and they will probably not be as harsh as the person who ignorantly says 'try thinking of someone other than yourself', although it is one minor suggestion, it is certainly not a good practical advice to help someone in a bout of depression. St Johns Wort is known to be effective for mild depression, but as has been mentioned check what the reactions are with other conservative medicine's because there can be side-effects. Good Luck. There are many people suffering. You are not alone.

Some one out there doesn't like the suggestion of St John's Wort!! Aka herbal Prozac. Omega 3 fish oil is supposed to be good for aiding mild depression. But I feel taking a any tablet does not eliminate the cause, which needs to be identified firstly after all how can something just disappear it will always be at the back of your sub-conscious never alleviated.

There is one anti-depressant that is free and has great side effects and that is exercise. If you get out and have exercise every day your depression may not be gone but it will improve. Please be very careful about herbal remedies as they can cause more harm than good when taken with other medications. They are a drug and must be treated accordingly. Check with your doctor if you current regimen is not working for you. He will be able to tell you what other medications (including over-the- counter) that have been tested for their effectiveness.

St Johns Wart is good but you should check with your GP first as if you take it with your other medications they could react badly. Also St Johns Wart does affect the effectiveness of some contraceptive pills, so if you are on the pill don't take it until you've checked with the docs.

i found tai chi by far much much much more effective than taking tablets. depression is caused by a chemical inbalance in the brain by result of something traumatic happening to u. i don`t know wot happens in tai chi but it balances out the chemical inbalance enabling u to function properly. it worked very effectively for me and i`ve never looked back. i deal wiv extreme amounts of stress every single day. i have no escape from that and tai chi also deals wiv that too. hope this helps u

i've recently been told about 5HTP which you can buy online or st john's wort. only problem i feel with this is that you don't know what dose to take and how stable are the elements. herbal doesn't mean safe. hemlock is a herb. have a chat with your gp or see a qualified herbalist

Just want to say that when you stop taking your prescription med, be sure and consult your dr. or pharmacist about the discontinuation. In most cases it is done gradually to avoid serious complications. Please take this seriously.
