To me, happiness in US Army basic training was:

1. Waking up after a full 7-1/2 hours of sleep, because I did not need to pull guard duty the night before.

2. Learning that the M16A2 did not require for me to clip a brass deflector to avoid brass hitting me in the face, since I shoot lefty. The M16A2 has a little bump strategically placed to bounce hot brass away.

3. Getting into that bus to AIT, knowing I would probably never set foot on god damn Fort Jackson, SC. again. I *really* hated that place.

Happiness in AIT was:

1. Midnight chow at the permanent party dining hall (most trainees were not welcome there). Greatest eggs to order I ever hard, pretty good stuff.

2. Knowing my MOS and ASI was so long that the drill sergeants started treating us like human beings after the first week or two (out of 20+ weeks of training).

3. Getting promoted to E4 within my first year of service, as a consolation price for getting sent to ASI school after just one frickin week into my 3-year tour in Germany. My friends in Ft. Gordon put me on a plane to Germany as an E3, I was back in CONUS a week later as an E4. Best part was the many times I was asked to provide proof I had been promoted for real :-)

That E4 promotion meant a lot more money, a 2-man room instead of an 8-man room, and assignment to platoon leader. Then to make things even better, I was the only non-NCO in my class. In an interesting display of integrity, the NCOs decided I would not be suckered into doing all of their dirty work at school (in almost every military classroom all cleanup is done by the students) so my assigned menial job was to wipe down our coffee table. This is while E5 to E7s were cleaning bathrooms and buffing floors.

obviously, A Happy Soldier in Training are all Happy because the recruiters tell you anything you want to hear so that you sign on the dotted.

(deliberately i answered this before i opened your link, sorry)

It is used as sarcasm. I liked basic but having to repeat everything over and over, getting yelled at for nothing, being woken up at all hours just because. It's a sarcastic way of telling a recruit 'hey this is what you signed up for...suck it up.'
