I assume you're asking for a reason - like do you wonder if you are depressed and/or if you need some help. A mental health professional can give you the best diagnosis. There are lots of questionnaires available on the internet and in books and magazines, and even in advertising for the drug industry. See how you do one some of those.

Crying a lot, feeling worthless and having no energy..not wanting to do the things you usually have an interest in...disturbances in your sleep patterns as well as eating habits. Not caring about your appearance or if you get things done on time or at all. There are a lot of symptoms but sometimes they are way more subtle...mine were very low self esteem and shyness...I also did not care that much if I did well in high school. I could have done much better looking back since I have been treated but I had no idea that I was so depressed. Now that I have gotten through it I realize I was always depressed. I am doing much better due to the right meds in particular. They have made an amazing difference in my life.

To completely answer your question would take weeks. Suffice to say I started looking at high places trying to decide if they were high enough to do the job or just high enough to hurt you real bad.

I went the shrink route, 2 or 3 years, lots of different meds and finally gave it all up as a bad idea. The only people my meds helped were the folks around me and the manufacturer. I felt like a doormat or some puppet on a string always smiling. The shell changed but the core never budged.

Everybody says there is help, well you can't prove it by me. I'm still sick, maybe worse than ever.

I really do wish you the best of luck. I hope you can realize a better ending than I did.

There is some criteria to make diagnosis of depression.

a) You feel sad and tired.
b) You feel more hunger, or you don't feel hunger at all (you gain or lose weight).
c) You can't get sleep at night, or you can sleep a lot.
d) You lost pleasure in activities that previously gave you a lot of pleasure.
e) You feel tired or empty .
f) You become restless, you can't stop moving legs or arms.
g) You feel fatigued, energy-less.
h) You feel guilty and not useful.
i) You can't concentrate.
j) You have had suicide thoughts.

And you've had these symptoms for more than 6 months without a reactive cause (for example, death of a family member...)

You must get professional help immediately after you realize you might have depression, and consult your psychiatrist. You shouldn't be afraid, depression is quite common and a prepared doctor can help you.

Often people with depression don't realize they need to get help. Symptoms vary greatly. Sometimes a doctor or friend/family member will realize a person needs help before the depressed person does.

I started noticing nothing was as fun as it used to be. Also a big sign was I was driving to work one day and a construction crew just finished putting up a road sign. It read; "Dude, Your Depressed!". Then right as I passed they took it down. That was the most obvious sign!

I hadn't brushed my teeth for a week, I was sad and didn't know why and I slept most of the time. I didn't want to do anything. I avoided family and friends and spent most of my time alone in my bedroom which had become a pigs sty.....
