Sin is an outdated concept. However, it is a tool that religion uses to get and keep its converts. Different religions use this tool in different ways. However, it really comes down to making people feel guilty for not being able to follow an impossible set of rules so that they feel they need the church to save them from being "imperfect".

Actually, the Bible says not to be attempting to communicate with the dead, which Mary is, though she may have been resurrected when the signs of the second presence of Christ began being fulfilled 90 years ago. Then, she is not a spirit being, but still the Bible says to only pray to God, through his Son, Christ.
As for what the Catholics, or any religion, is doing that goes counter to the Bible, that is why the Apostle Paul said to be continually taking in "accurate" knowledge. I assume that you are going to a Catholic School at the request of your parents, so for now, you are stuck with it, but the day will come when you can make your own choices, based on informed intent.

Much better phrasing of the same question. You deserve a clear, kind answer.
I was Catholic for 25 years, now 11 years pentacostal.
Catholic churches vary alot, though all will submit to the pope. Many do pray to mary, Many do not and call it sin. Many know Jesus is the path to heaven, and many thinks it is works that you earn heaven.
The catechism is where you need to turn for the catholics official stance, I have read a few pages, but never studued it. I came away with, "It leaves room for interpretation" And if you don't look to the bible refrences at the same time, the answers get obscured on prayer to / role model

Wow, you got alot of passionate responses on that last question didn't you. Actually, I believe the Bible says that Jesus was without sin. And holy is to be consecrated and set apart for God. So you can be holy too (just not holier than thou, hehe).
As for the Catholic question, I'm not, so I can't really help you there. But remember every one of us is under some kind of human authority in our lives. If you submit yourself to a particular religious way of life, you become subject to their human judgment. But I believe that only God, has the ultimate power to forgive sins, because of Jesus' blood (the ultimate sacrificial lamb).
Good luck at school.
Hoping the best for you...

No man can judge your sins... ONLY God can judge you... and ONLY God can forgive you of your sins. No one else has the authority... and no, God did not give the authority to priests or saints... He is the sole forgiver of sins...

If you are attending a Catholic school, why not ask your religious studies teacher?

Look at it this way: At least the Pope, however repugnant, actually EXISTS. Mary is dead if she ever existed at all and God is imaginary.
