Labs have a tendancy to eat alot and will eat everything in sight. My suggestion is feed a more nutritional dog food that fills the dog up instead of just satisfying the hunger. The cheap grocery store brands even science diet just serves as a filler. If you feed your lab innova, california natural, wellness, solid gold they all have all natural ingrediants. A lab needs fed 2 to 3 times per day to be plentiful, but its natural instinct will be go for the good stuff on the counter, so make sure you put all leftovers away so he cannot get it, put the dog in another room while food is left out and put the trash somewhere so he cannot get to it. OR put the dog outside.

I have a black lab as well. She never takes food without my okay. Even if it's on the floor. She'll stare it and wait for the magic word. The best thing to do is teach the dog the stay or wait command. Sit first then wait...positive reinforcement is the best way to go. A treat for sitting, and then practice small amounts of time. We took her to Pet Smart for training and it was the best money I've spent. As far as the trash goes though...we have to have a pop lid on our can or else when we're not home she goes diving. Lots of luck!

hey I have a two year old yellow lab, but we've had her since eight weeks. all you need to do is let it loose w/ stuff on the counter, in the trash, etc. and hide behind a wall or something and when it goes to eat it, smack your hand loudly on something to just scare it for the time to keep it from eating. but NEVER hit it- it'll just run from you every time you go to pet it, thinking you're going to hit it again. good luck!

Use a spray bottle filled with vinegar to spritz him every time he does it. That should break the habit. Whatever you do, never smack him with your hand. That will only teach him to fear your touch.
