2 Basic types/causes of burns- heat- and chemical-

Chemical burns- rinse the skin ASAP!!! Do not ask questions, do not pass go- Rinse that skin!!!! Get the chemical off the skin. Then call a doctor for further directions. They'll want to know what chemicals were in contact with the skin, what you've done, how long you've been rinsing the skin, etc.

Burns caused by heat come in 3 classifications-
1st degree- skin is red, no blisters- Cool the skin with a compress- running cold water works well, as does a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a washcloth or hand towel.

2nd degree- skin is red, blistering, possibly pealing- Cool the skin- running water is best. A compress can cause the blisters to burst, making infection possible. Once the skin is cool to the touch (Remove the skin from the water for a couple minutes- check skin temp). If the skin is still returning to hot after it's been under the water for 10 min, call a doctor. Avoid wearing clothing over the burn- clothing can irritate the skin causing blisters to burst. You want to wait as long as possible before allowing the blisters to break- the skin underneath needs time to mature enough to protect.

3rd degree- some layers of skin have been consumed by fire- Cover the area with clean cloth- dishtowels work well as they aren't fuzzy like a bath towel. Go to the hospital!! Skin layers have been destroyed and will need a doctor's attention....
