I want a snake for christmas. I tried to get a puppy, but my parents say im not responsible, and that they aren't going to have a animal in the house. I think if all i ask for is a snake, and i REALLY mean thats all i ask for, i might get it. But i don't really know what i would need. I know i need a lamp and like a glass case thats large enough. I've been looking at ball pythons. How big do they get??? How much do they cost at a Pet Store? Also, i will feed them rats, but is it possible to feed them dog food, or is there some other source of food i could feed them thats not "alive"(or frozen). How much would all the equipment set me back??? Is it possible for the snake to escape a case???
Please help.

o my gosh!!! PLEASE dont feed it dog food! It'll die! I have a corn snake.. that's probably the BEST snake.. they can grow to about 4-6 feet but a skinny.. If you get a Ball Python they will grow up to 6 feet, but at HUGE around... not your best choice for housing!!! Ball Pythons are cheap $70 but not your best choice. My Carn was $130. Please read on them before you buy them... After I bought everything to start.. I spend over $375 not including the bedding that has to be changed every 1-2 weeks.. frozen mice can get exensive and you HAVE to get an undertank heating pad or he wont be able to digest it's food and the mouse will rot in it!!! DONT FEED IT DOG FOOD! IT WILL AND CAN ONLY EAT MICE .. oh and as for escaping.. mine escaped 4 times.. gone for 3-5 days each.. i got a better cage and he's never gotten out!

Snakes do not eat dog food. If you want a live pet/snake, then think about getting one that is local, a garter or gopher snake. That way you can release him if you find it's not your thing. You can feed snakes 'frozen' mice- you have to thaw them first. Each snake needs a different enviornment, and a good enviornemnt is costly. They need the right size home, the right things to hide and hunt in, the right humidity and the right kind of light- plus each snake as a temperature range that is important. Snakes do escape. Check out Reptile sites on the web, and research. A better starter reptile might be a bearded dragon. Often a good pet of a different kind is a guinea pig or a rat.

1)NO, SNAKES CANNOT EAT DOG FOOD !

2) If your parents say you are not responsible for a dog, how is it they will give you a snake?

3)All snakes are escape artists. There is no such thing as an escape-proof case. I have had snakes for years & all of them escaped at least once (or more)

I seriously encourage your interest in herpetology.
Learn more about these fascinating creatures before you decide to get one as a pet. Reptiles have special needs that mammals do not have (living as they are within a mammalian house-your parents' house)

There are lots of snake-related questions in the resolved questions archives. Your local gerpetological society or reptile club can help you learn alot about herps. So can your local library.

If you show your increasing responsibility in other ways, maybe your parents will reconsider.

Good Luck!

no, they cannot eat dog food. you can, however, buy pre-killed prey that's frozen, either online or at a petstore. It's actually the more humane 9for the prey) way to feed. Also healtier for the snake, as many a snake has been wounded by it's prey.

Can't help you on the cost aspect, however I suggest you do a lot of research before taking on the responsibility of an animal with complex care needs.
