if you are just beginning, you may want to start with an older all manual camera - manual focus, and manual settings for aperture and shutter speed. this would be REALLY cheap (you can probably get a camera and lens on ebay for like $50 - just make sure the camera and internal light meter work) and would be a good way to learn the basics of exposure. if you want something more updated, you could find a nice autofocus/autoexposure body and zoom lens for $200 or so. Canon cameras are usually a good bet; also look into Nikon cameras. you can get some really good deals on these cameras since everyone's going digital. check out keh.com

STOP THE BUS. Maybe I am going to be shot down by all you other guys................Please,please dont buy a SLr camera. Rather go for a digital SLR camera, like the Canon 300 or 350 d. This is a great starter camera, and you can still learn all the basics and fundamentals of photography, BUT with the added feature of seeing your photos on the cameras LCD screen and if you own a PC, then you can load them straight from the camera to the PC.
I have 4 SLR cameras that are worth nothing, and have been sitting in my cupboard for 2 years without been picked up!!!
I also made the mistake of not going for a Canon or Nikon camera....dont be tempted to save a few bucks for going with other makes....GO FOR CANON....U CANT GO WRONG!!!!Best of luck choosing your camera...and welcome to the wonderfull world of photography!!!!!

Since it sounds like you are new to this business of film photography and you actually have set your price too low for a "professional" camera, I have a suggestion. Buy either a Nikon or Canon camera, such as a Nikon N-80 (autofocus), Nikon FM-10 (manual focus), Canon EOS Elan 7N (autofocus), or one of the Canon Rebel cameras. Get one "general purpose lens" of a wide-to-tele zoom of the same brand as your camera in the 35-105 range.

The Pentax K1000 is certainly a proven student camera that would serve you well, but you'll have to shop used, as I don't think it's a current model. It has been replaced by the KX-M, which looks like a good student camera.

Here are a couple of suggestions from B&H Photo and Video in New York that fall into your price range..

My reasons for suggesting Nikon or Canon is so that you can have the widest possibile selection of high quality lenses available to you. Once you have really gotten into photography, you will have a few lenses and then you can keep your top quality lenses and upgrade to a more expensive camera in the same line. Pentax is another fine camera with a huge line of lenses and I always owned Pentax film cameras, but I think you have even more to choose from in Nikon and Canon, so these are the brands I have recommended to my own children.

a mechanical 35mm slr is the best way to start. I reccomend an Olympus OM-1.

I loved my Brother's Minolta X-7A. From What I have heard they are among the top choices for amateur Photographers.

They Don't make them anymore, So If I anted One I'd Try E-Bay or somewhere similar.
