If there was no choice to leave, remaining would be pointless.
That is, God created people out of his bounty and love. He created people with the ability to love. And in order for us to be able to love, we had to have the choice to hate. Because "love" without a choice is not love. It is bondage.
So, God put the choice to stay with or leave him onto human beings, because the only thing that would have meaning would be if we *chose* to stay. The Tree was the one thing that people could choose to eat of and separate themselves from God, or to leave be and remain with God. Notice that God didn't put 1000s of little insignificant choices in the Garden. Just the one big one.

It was the original deux ex machina (think that's how you spell it.) It moved the story right along now, didn't it? Then the talking snake. Oh yea, it wasn't really a snake even though we're ordered by God to hate snakes from now on. The tree symbolizes knowledge of life and death, of good and evil, we became conscious judging beings. There is no evil without a judge!

I am not an expert in this area of knowledge, but from my understanding, the tree of life bore fruit, God gave Adam & Eve (and all people) "free-will" (the power to choose good or bad) and upon exercising free-will, and making the incorrect choice, there was a consequence.

It wasn't the tree, it was the restriction placed on it. Adam and Eve were allowed to eat from every tree of the garden except the tree of life. They disobeyed the rule. They hid from God rather than admit their guilt. Then Adam blamed God because he said it was the woman that God gave him that made him eat. Read Genesis 3:1-12. So...if your father laid out a banquet table full of food and said that you could eat anything you wanted to except the chocolate chip cookies but you and your friend ate them anyway, then you hid under the table to avoid being found out and when you were caught your response was, "well, Dad it's your fault for letting my friend come to the banquet." What would you expect the response to be from your biological father let only your Heavenly Father?

Your not reading your Bible. It was The Tree of The Knowledge of Good, and Evil. The Tree of Life is altogether different.

there was the tree of knowledge of good and evil and there was the tree of life. Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge. had they eaten from the tree of life they wouldn't have been cast out of the garden and we would not be here. they would have lived for ever.

It wasn't a question of why have the tree there....it was a question of obedience.
That might be hard to understand, so let me give you an example:
Say your dad has a cup of coffee in his house, he tells you "Don't touch my cup of coffee. You can have anything else in the house you want, but that cup is mine. Don't touch." The point is not "whats the point of the coffee cup?"....the point is "that's not your coffee cup, don't touch."
Before you say, "well, why put the coffee cup there in the 1st place?" think, "well, why can't your dad have a cup of coffee in his house?"
Some people might say "well, if God knew that Adam and Eve were gonna touch it in the 1st place, why did He put in there?" Well, for that reason I just gave you above (about your dad having the right to a coffee cup -- God had the right to have that tree there), and b/c He wanted to show us that, even though He knew we were going to sin, He still wanted to show us His love by giving us the choice....He knew, yet He wanted to show us that no matter what, He loves us.
Hope that cleared everything up.
God bless you.

Wrong tree...tree of knowledge of good and evil. Eating its fruit would cause spiritual death. Their disobedience got them cast out of the Garden, so that they wouldn't eat of the Tree of Life and remain spiritually dead forever. It would seal them permanently in their fallen state. So they were removed from the Garden.

It's a plot device. The writers of the Bible needed to get man out of the Garden and into the drudgery that is everyday life. So they came up with the tree. And by the way, it wasn't the tree of life. It was the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Anyway, that's what it was. A plot device. Almost every writer has to dredge one up at some point.

The tree was there because God wanted to test those two stupid bastards he jsut created. Seriously: if they give me a paradise and all I haveto do is eat, sleep, garden around and ***** a hot gorgeous woman but NEVER TO EAT from that apple tree. I WOULD HAVE BURNED THE DAMM TREE.
Its something to do with free will... God will always let us choose between good and evil and we will always manage a way to fuc.k everything up
