it may be a little faster than normal but not what I would consider tachycardic...I can feel my heart beating through my shirt without pressing on it. Just very hard...and sometimes it seems to add a beat or skip one.

Several things can cause it. Panic attacks can do it, Mitral Valve Prolapse, dehydration, low blood pressure (generally caused by dehydration)...but it wouldn't be a bad idea to see a doctor. In my family, we have a thing called Orthostatic Intollerance which causes it. It sounds a little scary but it's easily handled. Tell your doctor and get checked though, if for nothing else but piece of mind! Best case scenario...you're in great health. Worst case...there's an issue but you catch it early. Good luck!

Answer: The significance of a "pounding, hard beat" depends on many factors and coexisting medical conditions. For instance, an occasional feeling of "skipped" or "strong heart beat" in an otherwise healthy person with a normal heart may be a normal occurrence. However, the same may not be true for another person with heart disease. The frequency, duration and speed of the pounding heart rate, as well as the symptoms these beats generate, are also important factors in determining if anything needs to done about evaluating or treating them.

This is one you will really have to go to the doctor for. My heart would seem to skip a beat - then follow up with a very strong beat. I wore a monitor for 24 hours to find that it is a benign condition called a "winky bloc". Now that my thyroid has been removed and the replacement hormone balanced, I have not had any problems - there wasn't supposed to ba a connection, but it sure seems that way to me.

Like a pounding heart beat, or a fast heart beat, or both?

Stress? Anxiety? Consult a Dr. Chances are, it's treatable and NOT cancerous!
