What do you mean "real truth"? There are a lot of real truths
(e.g. its the abbreviated chemical name for NutraSweet; it has a sweet flavor; its full chemical name is aspartyl-phenylalanine-1-methyl-ester; it was originally desinged to be an anti-ulcer drug).

Do you mean, "Is it safe?" Then the answer is a qualified, "No." But the fact of the matter is that nothing is safe. If you go outside you might be struck by lightenning. If you stay inside you might die from an earthquake.

The best qeustion is, "What risks are associated with use of this product? How does that compare to other similar products?"

The only real risk is to someone with a disease called phenylketonuria. This person cannot break down the aspartame all the way and toxic levels of phenylalanine build up in the blood. The rest of us break aspartame down into aspartic acid & phenylalanine (both natural amino-acids), methanol & formaldehide (both quickly broken down by the body and put out iin the urine). The controversy is whether any of these chemicals stay around long enough in the blood to cause problems. Obvioulsy you don't want to drink a jar of formaldehyde or straight methanol, both of which can cause sickness or death at high enough concentrations. But does drinking a 20 oz of pop in an afternoon lead to toxic levels of formaldehyde? Highly unlikely. It's gone so fast that there are just about as many scientiifc studies showing that it's there as there are studies showing that it isn't.

So, like anything else, all in moderation. Is Nutrasweet completely safe? No. Is drinking a diet pop every day going to hurt you? Probably not. People all over the world have done it for decades.
