My best friend and I want to kayak from Hudson to Kingston, staying overnight at the lighthouse in Saugerties. We plan to wear wetsuits and bring plenty of fluids, energy supplements, etc. We are both experienced. Does anyone have good advice for making this journey?

I live in Hudson, within 5 minute walking distance of the launch site. Thanks for some great advice!

This should be great fun!

There are lots of Kayakers now in the Hudson, quite a few launch from Malden NY which is just a couple miles north of the lighthouse. Pull in in Malden and check out the brickworks thats now quite a ruin but interesting....and grab a brick marked Malden as a keepsake....look for the rusted out gantry crane near a couple wrecked old barges and pull in near there (west bank) ...Clermont state park is on the east bank and is quite lovely as well.

If you can get some Kraus's Chocolates while in saugerties you'll be very happy...

Theres plenty of recreational traffic in the hudson around there, just watch out for the big commercial stuff in the channel.

Its about 15miles from hudson to the light house....should be easy...then another 10-12 depending where in kingston you're going... I dont know where you live or where your equipment is, but it might be possible to take Amtrack to hudson, then pick it up again in Rhinecliff just across the hudson from Kingston.

I dunno about that, kayaks have a very low profile in the water, you will be in "Shipping Lanes", some pretty huge ships go up the Hudson river, I mean it might be done with no problems, or you might get run over like a cardboard box, and nobody will even know it. Why put yourself in danger ?
