The actual answer is; If the aircraft makes an emergency landing or if it has an aborted take off you must be able to see outside in case there are hazards which will hamper your evacuation. This is also the reason they dim the lights on night flights, so that if you have to evacuate then your eyes are already adjusted for the dark.
