A WIC nurse told me it was recommended to teach babies to drink from a regular cup, instead of using a "sipy" cup, because sipy cups are like an extension of the bottle .... I find this hard to do.... Tell me: is it possible to teach a baby to drink from a regular cup, or should I use a sipy cup? Again, I know this sounds ignorant, but I'm a new mom and I keep hearing all these new opinions....

With my son I introduced him to regular cups when he was 10 months old at feeding time, I gave him a sip after every few bites and now that he's 15 months he drinks it by himself. Be carefull though, if your baby is not thirsty then your son/daughter will dump it and play with it. I tried a sippy cup but my son didn't like them, he was just too impatient and wanted his drink right away. Also you could try juice boxes with 100 percent juice. My son loves to drink from straws and juice boxes offer the security of little mess. Whenever you make the switch though, have lots of patience and be aware you might end up with a few messes!

It's hard to keep up with a baby and a cup. I would only give the baby a cup when it is possible to watch the child while they drink. For outside trips I would use the sippy cup. Eventually your child will learn to drink form a regular cup. I find it kind of hard sometimes with the open top cup because I usually have to clean up spill after spill. I would personally give my child the sippy cup and only give the regular cup when I can keep an eye on her/him.

It is possible but hard to do. I had my son on a sippy cup only for a few months, then he decided to try the big boy cup.

Honestly, do what you feel is best for your child. You dont need a nurse telling you that you shouldnt use a sippy cup. Just dont let your child be 4 years old still using a sippy cup. That drives me nuts when I see parents letting their kids have those at an older age. Its their decision though and it is yours too....

Regular cups are super.. if you want to have the kid dump liquid all over him/her and if you never want to be able to take a drink in the car with the kid.

Give the kid a sippy.. it's not like a bottle.. in fact most kids HATE sippy cups at first because you have to actually suck pretty hard on the no-spill ones to get anything out.

WIC is run by a bunch of idiots...

You don't say your baby's age.... but a sippy cup is a good interim step - once they get the hang of it, they usually move on to a real cup quite quickly -have cute light ones that fit their little hands. We only had to have one sippy cup, because that's all he used...

personally i think sippy cups replace bottles.I think they should learn to drink from a cup.Im a 41yr old Grandma of two beutifull little girls they and their dad are living with us since the mom ran off and decided she didnt want to be a mom,any ways--i like to use cups at meals sitting at the table and when they need a thirst quencher (stading in the kitchen only no wondering around with the cup)sippies are great for going places and traveling.Right now im alowing a sippy at night like a bottle to the youngest only becouse of her emotional needs at this time.I have alot of say like their my own becouse their dad is going to school and working on the fire department and is also air force on weekends and just finished school for EMS and other od jobs trying to secure his future for his little ladies. But thats my oppion on sippys.Plus alittle more info then you bargined for!
