I had this problem with my new 6000 dollar falcon northwest, for some reason the cd would not do the live update on the internet. Dell should be able to get you a serial number that will be legit to do your install, if not and you run out of all other options i would check out www.altavista.com and see about what serials you can get there. I mean if you have a legit copy and it wont work, and dell support wont help you what can you do?
