I did hear about this..it's terrible. I don't know what kind of person harms children. I'm an aide in an elementary school while going to school to be a teacher. Honestly, pretty much anyone could walk right in! The gates are open and the classrooms are unlocked. There is a large sign that says "Sign in- in office" but if you don't want to no one is going to stop you from coming on in. It is very, very scary and something needs to change. It may irritate people to sign in three different times and be let in by security guards, but we need to be much more cautious with our children's lives. Our government can guard Area 51 like you would not believe, but for some reason we can not find some simple solution to stop the killings of our children in a place where they should feel safe. It must end!

this scares me too! and also all the news about bullies, pedophiles, etc... I mean, this world is insane! my daughter is only 5 months old, if this world is like this NOW..... how will it be by the time she has to go to school??? I seriously consider the possibility of homeschooling her... I don't care if they call me "old fashioned" or if they say I'm denying her a "normal child's life", I'd rather that than coming home one day to hear in the news that she was shot by some maniac!

Of course schools are safe. It's the wackos out in the wider community with guns that are horrendously scary.

The latest was in Nickle Creek, PA...close to where i live.
Schools were never meant to be a sanctity. Schools started to become safe houses in case of attacks at war, but it was never implied that they are guarded under lock and key until recently. And even then, it is up to your local school board to implement security measures such as guards, metal detectors, or key less entry.
Talk to your school board to see what they are doing in your district. You may be shocked and amazed at what they AREN'T doing.

Yup, heard about it.
Think about it. How can a school promise safety? Sure, it can have rules, but all they can do is talk to a students' parents, or, at worst, expell a student. This doesn't stop that potentially dangerous student's allies from "inheriting" violence duties. Sure, schools try to enforce peace, but they are limited in their abilities.

There's almost no way anymore to protect your children from everything out there. You have to try and teach them yourself what to do in emergency situations. Run some imaginary scenes by them and talk about their responses.'
