I remember seeing a dog die when I was a kid. When it did finally die, I could hear dogs all over the neighborhood howling. It was like they knew or something, even though it didn't make any noise. It was eerie.

as mention above, dogs do not howl at the full moon; this is folklore. There have been studies into why dogs howl and the conclusions are quite understandable. First off, if a puppy is taken away from its mother too soon, it will howl more often than those taken away on time or late. Dogs have better hearing that humans and some sounds stimulate howling. Things like sirens on cop cars or abulances, dog whistles, and even some truck exhausts encourage dogs to start howling. Not all sirens or whistles or trucks stimulate the dogs but only specific ones with specific pitches. Cop cars and ambulances have at least 2 different types of sirens in the systems. Not common knowledge but i know from experience. Most cops don't even know about the 2 diffrent types(though you think they would know everythign about their vehicles). Loneliness is an issue that makes dogs want to howl. Animals, like humans, don't like being alone for too long. The howl is a form of letting others in the area "hey... i'm here.. anyone else here?" Dogs also sense death. They know when a dog in teh neighborhood dies and will howl as a form of rememberence. Other dogs will hear this and join in. If you listen to it, there are different types of howls, high pitch, middle pitched, and low pitched ones. Each one is different and says something different.

Dogs do not howl at the moon........it's folklore. They probably hear something in the distance that you can't hear. Like sirens or other dogs. sometimes my dogs will howl because they want something that they can't have or they can't get to. they smell other dogs (females) or they smell food or cats. They howl when they are lonely and want attention.

dogs howl through the night because they know when its dark and to warn strangers away from there territory and when dogs howl when its full moon its only cause they are a relative to the wolf and when wolfs howl its only when its dark and thats when wolfs go and hunt only when its darks.
