These terms tend to have varying meanings according to the academic discipline under consideration. In philosophy, discursive ideas are those which can be arrived at through reason and logic, or objects external to thought mediated by images derived from sensory perception. Nondiscursive understandings are derived from the symbolic--myth, ritual, icon. Both are essential components of how we acquire knowledge as well as how we read and interpret texts.

What is discursive can be encompassed with language, verbal or written. That which is non-discursive cannot be put into words. Aspects of our experience with art, god, or each other are non-discursive. Concepts, certain ideas, and teachings can usually be put into words and are therefore discursive.

Religious believers might live life full of regret and at the same time hope because of the NOTION of God and the afterlife. However non-believers will live life and see it as something less consequential and hence will live with more relief and love for all people.
