Yom kippur is a day of forgiveness. The most important day of the year. We dress nicely eg suits maybe white clothing for atonement. It's a day a fasting. No eating for 25 hours. The service is long. The fasting is so we can focus on repenting. It was a day in Jewish History when we were forgiven. So its very special. Its not mourning though, just serious.

yom kippur is not a holiday. it is a day of fast, in which we repent for the things we've done wrong to others throughout the year. yom kippur is held at the beginning of the new year in order to have a fresh start for a new year.
