If his ears are sore he's probably fed up with having them pulled around. Go very slowly and take your time. Don't act rushed or aggravated. Put him on the lead, tie him up short to something solid. Have the bottle ready upside down with the drops ready to come out. Stroke the top of his head, gently turn over the ear flap and drop them in before he notices what you're doing, then let the ear flap drop and very gently rub his ear.
If you can't manage that then you'll have to get someone else to hold him, use a muzzle if you have to.
Or see if there's a local groomers that will help.

I'm having to put ear drops in my dogs ears at the moment and its a regular thing as he has persistant ear problems.
The best way i have found is to muzzle him and also get someone else to help. I get him to sit by me and then i hold the muzzle whilst my other half puts in the drops, he remains calm and allows you to do it, where as before without it he would get stressed and even try to bite lol
I wouldn't recommend doing it whislt the dog is sleeping, if you startle the dog it may jump and you could harm the ear more!
Hope your having some success!

This is a right old game if you have got an awkward dog like yours and mine. I have to carry the drops with me at all times and get him when he is unsuspecting. And have you ever tried clipping his toe nails ?, stone me that's a saga !

You might have to get someone to help you hold your dog down. Then just hold his head still and put in the drops. They don't like it, but it's not like you're hurting them.

maybe you could give your dog a treat and while he is eating it scratch its belly and then apply the ear drops while its eyes are closed

Hmmm...With my dog we just pin him down. Then follow the instructions on the bottle. Pet and talk to your dog while you are doing this.
