I am going through the academy and my probation period here in California, but I would ultimately like to move to and retire in Florida.

I would like to go through my probation period here in California, save up some money, and move out there in time to take my Sergeant's exam...that would allow me an income to live on out there. Honestly, I am in good shape, but at 42, I am no spring chicken either, so "Action Jackson" I am not! But I do want to feel good about keeping my community clean, I guess somewhere on the West Florida side would be best for me. SO CONVINCE ME!!

What are you looking for? The regions in Florida are all different. The further north you go in the state, the more it's like the south.

Central Florida is a mix. I live in Lakeland which is right between Tampa to the west and Orlando to the east. Tampa has a huge Cuban community with a lot of heritage. I prefer the west side of Florida than to the east. Orlando is very touristy and "plastic." That is why I like Lakeland.

Then you have the communities along the beaches.

Going south toward Miami is very busy. But the side that Ft Myers is on is very laid back. Then you have the Keys which is almost like anything goes. It's also expensive there.

I'm not a police officer, but I live in Pinellas county. Pinellas county is located on the Gulf of Mexico, in central Florida. We have beautiful weather year round. There are many miles of white, sandy beaches. The fishing is very good. It is 150 miles to Disney. There are many places for amusement in the area.

There is the Tampa Buccaneers, Devil Rays baseball, and The Lightening hockey team for sports.

The cost of living isn't bad. It is not crime-ridden here. Nice place to live and work. Traffic is not overly congested.

In the winter, it is more crowded because you have the "snowbirds" (people from the north) coming to escape the cold weather.

Good luck in your future endeavors.

Are you looking for a fast department? If so, Metro-Dade PD, Broward Sheriff's Office, or City of Miami PD are where you want to be. Spanish is helpful, but if you don't speak it, don't worry.

If you want somewhere more laid-back, central Florida is more rural and easygoing.
