Check with your art supply store. They should sell both "gloss medium" and "matte medium". Both of these are clear. The matte medium will give you a flat finish. Both of these mediums are acrylic. If you use a gesso, the same manufacturer should also produce the mediums (which I assume is the correct spelling instead of media).

Use a good quality broad soft brush. Preferably mask around the outside of the area you wish to paint. Apply a smooth, even coat several times. You may want to add a small amount of water to you paint (if you're using acrylic) to create an even coat. If you are using paper (especially a cheap paper) you may find that the paper wrinkles. You can help prevent this by laying the paper on some board, and masking tape the paper to the board first, nice and flat. You could also lay the paper under as many books as you can find (after it's dried of course)

Make sure to thoroughly mix your paint . Then use a large brush.You must work quickly with acrylics and don't overwork the paint.

I don't recommend using acylics for a smooth flat tone...a sax is better
