We have a 5 month old Shar pei/chow. We have had her for almost a month now, but everytime we try to bathe her she barks, and it almost sounds like she is screaming. She tries so hard to get away. She never bites, but just the sound of her is so scary. My boyfriend has to bathe her. I am too scared. I know she wont bite, but the way she sounds is like she is going to attack!!
Is it possible for her to ever get over this, or is this something common with her breed?
Thank you for any kind of help!

It's up to you but I would never entrust any dog of mine that's already afraid of a bath to a groomer - someone she doesn't know or trust. If you're afraid of this dog, be sure she knows it and will respond to your fear.

I can't see your dog so don't know what exactly she's reacting to. Do you run the luke warm water in the tub before putting her in? Do you get her head wet right away? A lot of dogs really hate getting their heads wet, and the best way, is to do it last, being careful not to get water in their eyes.

What I would try is put an inch or so of warm water in the tub. Then lift her in. She might be afraid of the shower head, so why not have a pitcher and pour water over her with that (not her head yet). When she's wet, shampoo her, talk to her calmly - if you're not calm, she can't be either. Rinse her off, then attempt her head depending on how calm she is. You might have to do this in stages a bit - desensitize her before tackling her head.

If she gets too wild, you can put a muzzle on her but I'd use that as a last resort because she'll be fighting the muzzle. What you can use as a muzzle if you need one is a piece of pantyhose. It's soft and won't hurt her and you can tie it only as tight as you need to.

She should get accustomed to bath time and realize she doesn't get hurt, then she should calm down. Does she let you blow dry her when she's done? If so, you can give her some treats then. Brush and blow dry simultaneously and her coat will turn out gorgeous plus she'll dry faster. If you keep her well brushed and she doesn't get into anything, she shouldn't need to be bathed too often. Good luck with her!!

I would go to a professional groomer. Shar Pei/Chow mix is tricky. Both those breeds can get very nasty when frightened. I would want the dog to be muzzled for his safety and yours.

You can take your dog to the proffessional groomers place, make sure you check out the place first before you bring your dog there, you can ask the groomers to do a desensitizing day for your puppy first before grooming him.

Good Luck

if she has not been properly trained to be bathed you would probably be best advised to get a professional grooming salon to do it. They will be more confident with her which will help her.
