I am also just asking if he will deployed anywhere overseas early (the first year), not just a combat zone. Thanks for your answers but smart A`s I can do without.

The likelihood of your son being deployed "at once" upon completing Tech School are 0%. He will receive orders to his first duty assignment after Tech school. He may receive orders to an Overseas base (i.e. Germany/Japan) and proceed there after Tech School. But that would not be a deployment, it would become his Home Station for 1/2/3+ years.

The chances of him being stationed overseas for his first assignment are probably around 70/30 (with 30 going overseas) I am guessing that he is a 3C0XX AFSC (Air Force Specialty Code)? If that is correct then he will have a huge range of bases which he could be stationed at, some jobs only have postings at certain bases, but most computer/communication jobs are available at every base world wide.

As for Deployment, that will largely depend on where he is stationed. Without knowing his AFSC it is a little difficult to say what his chances of deployment are, but again it is more dependant on his base and unit of permanent assignment. For instance: Your son graduates Tech School and receives orders to Tinker AF Base, OK. He is assigned to the 3rd Combat Communications Unit. He would now be living (stationed) in OKC, but because he is assigned to a Combat Unit, he has a very high chance of being deployed.

Having said that, even Combat units try not to send people on deployments directly out of Tech School as your son will continue doing correspondence training after Tech School.

For another example, let's say your son is assigned to Yokota AB, Japan with the 374th Comm Squadron. He would be living in Japan (again for 2/3+ years depending on marital status/personal preference) but because the 374th is a "fixed" Comm unit his chances of deploying (unless he volunteers/fights to go) are slim.

In reality if your son is still in basic there is no way to give any accurate estimate of whether/when he will be deployed. The biggest determining factor for deployments are: Unit of Assignment, and Job (AFSC).... In that order.

After all this, my answer to your question would be the odds of your son deploying during his first year in the Air Force are low. He (and his family) should be prepared for it, but it is not too likely. Once he has completed all his additional (after Tech school) training his odds of deploying will go up, and after that it is just a matter of time.

Anyone who posted here that he would be deployed immediately after Tech School does not know what they are talking about, and are probably in the Army, referring to Basic Training as "Boot Camp" is a dead give-away that someone is either a civilian or in the Army.

And now that I ripped on the Army, bigyu23's answer is pretty good also.

if he is a brand new tech guy, most likely pretty low, cuz they would want him to work around some experience ppl in a regular work environment first to get some experience so when he is out there doing something for the first time in the real environment he is not trying to learn, at the same time have a lot of ppl depending on him

and since he is a rear arear POG, especially with the AF he is going to be in an A/C trailer or building somewhere very safe, maybe not even in Iraq, in Kuwait, Qatar or someplace like that and not worry about a thing while getting the tax-free benefits

plus comp tech school is couple of months long so dont worry, all ppl out there just want to scare and discourage others cuz they are too scared to too anything directly themselves and have to resort to these cheap tactics

Relax mother. His chances of going overseas will mainly depend on the career field (job) he applied for when he joined and where personnel are needed when he completes all his training. Normally the AF tries to make sure that someone gets suffiecient training and some experience in his field prior to sending them overseas.
He has made a good choice for himself so untie him from the apron strings but give him a lot of love in your letters and respect him for that. I was only 17 when I joined in 1952 so I can remember how it felt yet today and always looked for some great letters from my mom often. Oh, and don't forget a care-package now and then with cookies (but pack them well) as that was my favorite to look forward to. My very good wishes and good luck to him.

it all depends on his career field... if he is a Cop his chances are higher since the manning for cops is so low. Other career fields are low on manning as well... its 50/50.
I've seen many get deployed right after tech school - its all about the manning. The AF can waive anything these days. However they do TRY not to send them until they have completed their CDCs.

Saying not too many getting shipped out right after tech school is simply ridiculous. As soon as you are out of boot camp and schooling you are shipped IMMEDIATELY to where you are needed. No if's, and's, or but's. We're sending the National Guard over there for crying out loud. It's a high likelihood that he will be sent ASAP, so pray for him, because Bush sure doesn't give a damn about him.

There is a good chance he will have to go overseas, but there is also a good chance that he will be sent to a base in the United States. I would say it's 50/50.

A lot depends on what unit he gets sent to. If they are just returning it will be a while, if they are getting ready to leave he will go to. In my unit there were a lot of Marines that checked in just to turn around and be deployed in two weeks, so it can happen.

Very very low. Not too many people get shipped out right after Tech School, especially admin personnel. Everyone is deployable, but it is not likely to happen so soon. Don't worry. But don't count on him NEVER being deployed.
