Actually it's not true. Hair doesn't grow after death either. The old wives tale came about because as the body shrinks and decays, the hair and nails appear more prominently, as if they continued to grow. They don't.

--And I thought I was the only 1 that knew this (lol)

Yes I have heard that and your hair. Uh oh I had to prove myself wrong. But hey I learned something.

It is a myth that nails and hair will continue growing for several days after death. The appearance of growth is actually caused by the retraction of skin as the surrounding tissue dehydrates (desiccation), making nails and hair more prominent.

Yes I did. Why are you posting that here? Did I miss my initiation into the cult of "The Ever-growing Fingernails"?

This is an urban legend. The same urban legend states that hair continues growing.

Tissue growth needs energy and raw materials in order to do so. In death, such mechanisms are no longer available. So this is impossible.

yes i have been told that. i find it all to be very strange. they even claim that a persons hair also keeps growing. But i dont know what to believe....... because you would think the finger nails would be so brittle and break without the propper nutrients....

plus there is no air in the coffen..... so I am not sure.

Actually, I've heard that's not right. That what happens really is our skin dries and recedes a bit making our nails appear longer. But who knows.

No that don't. They are dead cells as soon as you see them. They appear to grow as the skin on the fingers shrinks and recedes

No, they don't.
You skin shrinks and make it appear like our nails and hair are growing.

Actually, they don't.

The skin around 'em decays and exposes more nail -- so they seem to grow.
