80lb draw weight sounds REALLY light for anything other than fishing. In PA the minimum is 125lb draw to hunt. I use it to extend my season. As long as I purchase the proper tags/license, I'm allowed to hunt with it during all seasons - bow, muzzle loader, flint lock, & gun. This means I can hunt Oct - Jan (woo f'n hoo!). Treat it the same as a gun - it is just a powerful (almost). Wax the strings and lube trigger, release, safety, etc. Good luck.

The primary advantage crossbows have over longbows is ease of use.
Take a look at a crossbow's trigger mechanism. The nut, holds the bowstring in place under tension. This permits the user to take his/her time aiming. Additionally, the only thing the user has to do is hold the weapon in his hands. The weapon is not exerting a force on his arms, shoulders and back. Given a windlass or another mechanical spanning tool, a 9 year old girl can span and shoot a crossbow.
This is quite tiring and can quickly exhaust the archer. Conventional bows can be shot more quickly if the archer is skilled. Note how ripped that dude is. Bows are difficult to draw and people with that kind of upper body strength are rare, even in modern times, much less medieval times.

My son killed a 500 lbs feral hog with one, think a 100 lb. Get a case, don't dry fire it, and check with your state regs as many states (like TN) are changing rules to allow crossbows. See link to all 50 states DNR below.
