Your question is a misnomer. Christians are NOT ashamed of Jesus. If people are ashamed of Jesus they are NOT Christians.

It just depends on the type of person. If you believe in any denomination of Christianity, you believe that God has mercy on you and you believe we are all equals. If you deny your faith, God will not send you to Hell, He will take away your "rewards" in heaven. For some people, standing up for your faith can be a hard thing. But Jesus has ensured that all who truly believe and accept Him (whether they say so or not) will go to heaven. Of course that isn't saying that denying your faith is a good thing :). Why... As I said, some Christians have a hard time with peer pressure... It just depends on the type of Christian.
