The Apostle's Creed mentions this quite explicitly... Do you agree with this view?

"I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; HE DESCENDED INTO HELL; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty…"

Im not sure about all Christian points of view, but I know that Catholics do believe this. It's called the Harrowing of Hell.
It works like this....

All of the people who died before the time of Jesus could not gain entrance into heaven yet for the Messiah had not come and taken their sins upon Himself and become a sacrifice. So, because they could not yet go to heaven, those who had faith in the Messiah and faith that He would come, even though they did not know that it was Jesus specifically, were kept in hell. They were caged in hell only because they could not yet go to heaven, but they were not tormented like those who were in hell. They were almost in a special little area that simply existed to house those that would go to heaven after the Messiah came. I have heard it mentioned as Hades, the name the Greeks gave to the Underworld.

So then when Jesus came and died, it was then possible for all of those people in hell to gain entrance into heaven and so Jesus literally descended into hell and released all of these so that they could finally make the journey upward, so to speak.

Its a pretty interesting little story to say the least. Like I said Im not sure if its a common belief of all of Christianity, but I know that it has been part of Catholic Tradition for a long time as I have studied Roman Catholicism and understand that it is a basic element of the Paschal Mystery, the life death and ressurection of the Christ.

Yes but, the hell that was spoken of then was where all dead went. He went there to bring the ones that belonged to him out that's why there is mention that after Jesus rose from the dead several people saw loved ones that they knew had died. I think they were raised and then did not go into Heaven until Jesus ascended to Heaven. I believe this is why he cried when he saw Martha and Mary crying because he knew where his friend Lazarus was.

Jesus did not go to hell, He went to Hades, a middle place where saints of God of pre-redemption waited for their sins to be paid for. Hades is described as Abraham's Bosom, and Paradise in the Scriptures. Jesus went there to allow them into Heaven and destroy this middle place.

Hope this helps!

Booyakasha!

Depending on your translation, yes. Hell is taken from the Greek word "hades" which simply means the common grave of mankind, not a place of torment.

Well I dont know for sure. I know alot of christians believe this. I do know that he paid for our sins, so wouldnt that suggest he decended into hell to pay for our dastadly deeds on earth? Good question though. I would say that it is suggested. I dunno what the bible says... or cant remember... been a long time since I opened those pages, but I do think that perhaps he did.
