The type of gifts to give for a engagement party are the same type you would give at a wedding shower. First off check their registry. If they do not have one get a gift card or give money.
Contrary to what another person said gifts ARE given at engagement parties. I've attended many and never saw anyone arrived empty-handed. Just like a wedding shower or wedding itself it is very bad etiquette in this day and age not to bring a gift when someone is paying to have you attend their function.

Since you're going to an engagement party you'll definately find good stuff at Bed Bath and Beyond. Since a couple is engaged, they'll definately need household products. Such things that a couple could share would be towels, kitckenware (i.e. non-stick pans/pots, silverware set, .. etc), wine glasses, .. just be creative and do you know if the couple has a registry gift list at a retailer store? If so, that can be also helpful and be able to choose gifts so that another person won't buy the items you might buy.

well two answers...
if you know them very well:
give them a gag gift, life some type of ball and chain thing, or condoms, or something from specers that is making fun of the fact that they are no longer "single" and are all tied down. but make sure they are funny types and wont be offended. but also include some type of gift card to go along with the funny part.
try to get it from somewhere interesting, like a store they like (not just target or jc penny). try something romantic like a night at the hot-tubs, or a nice dinner.
if you dont know them:
go with a simple gift card from somewhere that has a lot of different things to choose from. i would stay clear of household things because then you will not have something to get them for there actual wedding
most of all don't go to crazy with the gift because it is just a engagment party, they are going to want you to do your best on the wedding gift. i would really go with something they can use just the two of them and its romantic or something they can use to privatly celibrate their engagment.

You may want to ask if they are registered for gifts yet, and where. If they are, give a gift from the wedding registry. If not, gift cards are good. Or bring a bottle of champagne and toasting flutes. You could also get them something for their home or apartment, or something like a keepsake photo album or scrapbook to put pictures and memories from the engagement party.
These are all gifts that my husband and I recieved when we were engaged.

Gifts are not usually given at engagement parties.
If the couple is the gift-grubbing type they may have already registered somwhere, which is you usually find out by looking htem up at weddingchannel.com
Gift cards and money are impersonal gifts.

if the couple likes wine, find a nice bottle of pinot nior and some nice glasses that could be used for their first dinner party after they are married. i normally included those with a nice wicker picnic basket that has the corkscrew, napkins, a checkered table cloth, dishes, and some samples of fine cheeses and meats. good luck and enjoy the party!

I always take the safe route and bring gift cards to everything like that. That way the person can choose what they need in their future. You know where these people shop, so target, walmart, kaufmans, places like that where they can get things for their lives together.

The best present would be a gift card to somewhere they like to shop at, that way they can get whatever they want. They can use it to buy something they need, something they want, or something for the wedding.

I have been involved in several weddings and its always a safe bet to look up their wedding registry and get what they like/asked for.
