Most zoos have signs at all the displays, displaying facts about each animal, where they come from, how they live in the wild, what they eat etc. Take the time to read the signs with the children, and perhaps explain more, perhaps about the counties the animals come from. The kids don't have to write reports or anything, that might tak away from the fun, but just by doing this the day will be a learning experience in itself.

Call ahead to the zoo and ask what resources they have for schools. Most zoos have coloring pages, reference pages etc that they share with schools when they come for field trips. Most of the time, they are more than happy to share those with individuals, too. When my kids were younger (before they could read) we would make a bingo game with pictures of the animals and they would have to mark off the animals they saw. We, also, would do a matching game. They would have to match pictures of animals with their habitats. We are a homeschooling family and we have learned that anything can be an educational experience.

Before or after you go, have a lesson plan on animals. Then go to the zoo and have a treasure hunt, looking for their favorite animal.

Hope this helped!

At 4 and 6 years old children just want play and be entertained, take them round as many animals as possible than ask them what their favourite animal was and why. Mine are the penguins.
