Why do people add water to their whisky?

Does it matter if its warm water or cold?

Adding a tiny drop of water to whisky actually helps bring out the flavour. It has to be only a drop though, too much and you will dilute the flavour. Not sure if this works with bourbon but certainly with scotch.

I have always wondered the same thing. It's not like the water and whisky mix, you're still getting the full-strength whisky after the water goes in!
It tastes just awful too. I'd rather just take the shot!

Adding water is a terrible thing, especially when it is a quality whisky.

I do, on occasion, add one cube of ice just to chill the whisky, but it never lasts long enough to melt, so I am satisfied that I am not as much of a philistine as water-adders!

i like whiskey on the rocks with a splash of water and a twist of lemon. It turns a strong liqour into a more subtle sippable drink, great before dinner or theater it doesn't burn the taste buds or bloat the belly.

Jane is correct! It's use is to dilute the whiskey; it's for a personal tasting preference. Adding cold/hot doesn't matter, just a splash is generally used. This is also done with Scotch, though I don't do it to either one.

I consider that Alcohol Abuse~Be well!

I drink Canadian Whiskey and spelled it correctly, ,idiot!

Helps take away the burn without impairing the flavour too much, but it also takes away the fun. Better to be (slightly) warm if you are going to use water.

Bob-bob is correct.

Adding a tiny drop of water brings the flavour out.

And watch your spelling. "Whisky" is the correct spelling of scotch. (the real stuff made in Scotland).

"WhiskEy" is the spelling of a vile liquid made in Ireland, Japan, America etc. Its horrible and isn't alllowed to be called "Whisky"

I have never seen anyone add water to whiskey, maybe it is because it is too strong? I thought people added coke though?
