What is 'love' to you, just a chemical reaction? Or is it something deeper than that?

Reason why I asked atheists is because most atheists believe everything’s got a scientific or logical explanation where as most spirtual people would believe that there is a deeper meaning to life and love.

Romantic love is cause by a chemical reaction. The chemical is phenylethylamine. It usually lasts from 18 -36 months that's why in the beginning you f--k like lab rabbits. Did you ever hear you have a chemistry with someone? FYI, phenylethylamine is found in chocolate and marijuana.

Its a wonderful natural antidepressant. Ever feel depressed when you're in love and somebody loves you back?

I don't understand why it should be different for an atheist, love is the same thing for everyone, it has nothing to do with religion, nationality or race. It doesn't mean if you don't believe in god you can't love, love is a chemical reaction AND something much, much deeper, do you really think that if somebody doesn't have a religion he/she won't love their children?

Just because something has a logical explanation does not mean it can not also be deep, if you were more logical you would understand that. Atheists are just as capable of love as non atheists.

By the way, I have seen some of the hypocritical self indulgent so called love practised by some religious people and it is far from deep.

Love is, indeed a "chemical reaction" that has favored those who experience it from an evolutionary standpoint. Love tends to promote long, monogamous relationships, which promotes stable & successful families, and well-balanced children who go on to repeat the process.

Ironically, the most "religious" of families are the ones least-likely to repeat this pattern.

The Divorce rate among atheists and agnostics is 21% vs. 30% for Jews, 27% for Born again Christians, and 24% for other Christians.

An atheist will reject god and have no religion in their life so shouldn't that mean they have less love in their life if its a deeper spiritual thing? but that isn't the case, whereas if its more a chemical/psycholigical reaction then everyone is capable of love whoever you are. So you're arguing atheists are right yea?

Your question is paradoxically flawed. An Atheist is someone who does not believe in Religion, in my case it is because I cannot fathom how somthing that pretends to be associated with a deity that is supposed to be an all loving and all forgiving god can cause so much death and suffering. Wars are fought over religion, hatred is fueled by religion, people are outcast, shunned and held in suspicion because of thier religion. So why is it that an atheist can see all this and a follower of religion cant. Just because we hate what religion stands for does not mean we are incapable of feeling love and other emotions.

We are social animals. We are our best selves when we exist in community. Our brains have developed the capacity to build these relationships so that we can support one another, learn from one another, reproduce and raise our children together.

Of course love come from a biochemical reaction. Have you ever known someone who has had a stroke or a brain injury in the area of the brain that manages social relationships? They no longer seem the same, and they have difficulty showing or receiving love.

But for the lucky majority, we are chemically & biologically programmed to behave and feel attractions in ways that lead us to cling to one another. And you know what? It works really well.

Easy. Love is how you feel towards someone else. Why does there have to be a god for that to happen? It's me feling imense about my girlfriend and my girl friend feeling immense about me. No three somes going on here. Can you religious folk not comprehend something nice without explaining it occuring because of some unseen, all powerful entity?
What is 'Hate' then. When a kid gets bullied & beaten at school each day is that an all powerful being?

I was unaware that human emotion had anything to do with a higher power.

It is a chemical reaction to stimuli as proven in scientific studies and imaging of the brain (all emotions are). How we interpret those chemical reactions is as individual as DNA.

Especially something like love. I love my dad, I love my significant other, I love my cats, I love my new car, I love shoes, I love to travel...

answering with a question yet again sorry.............what makes you think atheists dont have emotions based on faith? because even atheists have faith, this is not to say they believe in god rather that they dont believe, ie their faith is in the belief that god does not exist, so if they can have a faith, why can they not feel love like anyone else? after all, love is not purely based on chemical reactions in the body due to hormonal provocation (sexual desires etc.) what atheist out there can say they dont love their mother or father for instance? so yes love abounds and its not always a chemical reaction. but a faith in ideals founded by the persons upbringing.
