It is like xrays or a TV signal that is given off by some materials. It is also like light, which is a form of radiation. Or radio. Or heat. But if you get alpha, beta or gamma radiation, it damages the insides of your cells and can cause radiation sickness, which can be fatal, or birth defects. We always get a little radiation from outer space when we're outside, and a tiny bit during an xray at the doctor, but normally no one is exposed to too much. A nuclear bomb releases tons too much tho.
