Eating out in the theater district is about as much fun as sleeping in the Port Authority — and a lot more expensive. But our years of studied gluttony in the glare of the Great White Way have hipped us to a number of authentic (and relatively quiet) spots.
High-end:
DB Bistro Moderne is better than you may have heard. With dishes like the excellent boeuf en gelée with foie gras and horseradish sauce, there's a lot more to the place than the gaudy "DB burger."
Bann is an elegant progressive Korean restaurant from the owner of the fine Woo Lae Oak.
Cheap and old-school:
We love a big bowl of mofongo (plantains and cracklings) at the venerable Old San Juan, one of the city's oldest and most reliable Puerto Rican restaurants. 765 9th Ave, between 51st & 52nd St; 212-262-7013
Tout Va Bien is a true rarity — an ethnic hole-in-the-wall that happens to serve French food. Settle in and enjoy some red wine, a plate of coq au vin or tripe à la mode de Caen for less than it costs to have a pizza delivered.
Hell's Kitchen Northeast's Holes-in-the-Wall for Hotshots - If the gangs who once ruled Hell's Kitchen could see the neighborhood now, filled with media hotshots and admen from places like Hearst, Random House, Time Warner, and Ogilvy, they'd no doubt shake down the few fancier restaurateurs and then duck into one of the tiny Asian or Middle Eastern joints for a cheap plate of stir-fry, noodles, or spicy kebabs. Behind the countless family-owned storefronts in the micro- micro- neighborhood centered around 53rd Street and Ninth Avenue, you can find some of midtown's most enlivening flavors and aromatic, well-spiced cooking.

There are several very hip places down in the meatpacking district, but they are a bit pricey - Spice Market, Ono, and Pastis. Not only is the food excellent at these places, but the the ultra hip scene makes for great people watching.
Some other suggestions if you like Sushi are Poke in the upper east side. This place has the freshest sushi and it's BYO, so you'll save on drinks. For Sushi I also like Yama (multiple locations), Tomoe, and one of the more famous places is Nobu (very expensive).
If you like Italian, try Po, il Mulino (tough to get a reservation), Bello, or Mangia e Bevi.
If you want a great burger either hit up J.G Melons in the upper east side or the Corner Bistro downtown. Both dives, but GREAT burgers.
You want mexican, go for Dos Caminos or Zocala.
Hope this helps. Enjoy the city!
James

You don't have to eat an expensive restaurant. First time in NY, try Grey's Papaya, they have the best hot dogs. You can go to apple bee's. There are pizzerias. I will assume you are not going to be in all the time. So you'd probably end up eating at random places too.
