My husband and I are thinking of getting a shih tzu puppy. Do you prefer males or females? Why?

I have a female shih-tzu and she is just plain adorable. She has a stubborn little personality - and it makes me laugh. She guards her food - and teases my male Bichon.

I haven't heard this question in years - and I remember a friend of mine with a German Shepard giving me advice - he told me if I want a dog to protect me get a female. If I want a dog to play with get a female.

The female of the doggy world tends to be more aggressive than the males in the same breed. That isn't necessarily bad -- but just something to be aware of.

I've met male shih-tzus - they play just as much as my little one -- but I've never notice them teasing.

Also, I have to share this with you - I have never met such an intelligent dog as the female shih-tzu. I took her to a groomer who hurt her - and she let me know about it. Also, when the Bichon was little -- the Shih-tzu would squeal on his being bad... honest. Amazing how well she communicates. Wouldn't change her for the world.

I have a 10 month old male. I have had both male and female of other breeds. My best one was a male boston terrier. As far as shih tzu, I dont know what the difference would really be. A female you can definately do more dolling up and that makes them alot more adorable. But, other than that everything would be about the same. The long hair is something very hard to keep in good shape, though. Learned that the hard way. Even with very early grooming doesnt mean it will let you comb its face without trying to evade you. So, be patient and try to study all you possibly can on grooming or you will be going to the groomers to keep it shaved!! Best of luck! They are very great pets, funny and entertaining and smart. So, dont change your mind because of the hair!!

FEMALE!!!!
My friend have a female Shih Tzu, they are very very SWEET dogs. Plus in the future, if you want to breed your dog you can have puppies(and you & your husband will become gradma & Grandpa)!! So choose female~they are like sweet little girl.

well i have a male shih tzu and his is perfectly fine. but my friend has a girl one. she says that its harder because she has to send her to get surgery so she cant have puppies, clean up crap and blood from period, and give her special treatment. if you get a male you only have to do the basics:clean crap, wash, and give love.hope this helps.

Females, that's what I've always had. All the dogs I've owned have been female. If you plan on breeding, then a male would probably be better.

The females seem to be more affectionate, but it really depends on the dog. I would suggest looking around and meeting a few puppies before you decide, one should stand out to you or "bond" with you more than the others. Good Luck!

I prefer females....I think that they're easier to potty train, I've got a male chihuahua/terrier mix that is proving to be much harder than my female that I had years ago....
