If you are talking about strength to weight ratio, carbon fiber composite is probably the strongest material. With yields up to 200,000 psi and a density of 1.75 that of water. Aluminum comes in at 70,000 psi with a density of 2.7 and steel at 250,000 psi and a density of 8.
If you mean stiffness to weight, its different. Stiffness being how much something deflects under load. Strength is the maximum load without permanent deformation. For stiffness to weight Berylium is about the best. Its density is similar to carbon but its stiffness (modulus of elasticity) is almost 3 times that of carbon or steel and 8 times that of aluminum. It is expensive and is used in structures such as gyroscopes that require high stability and stiffness.

i think you "mean metre cubed for metre cubed, what is the lightest materia"l, or "what is the least dense material" because as everyone seems to have said, pound for pound everything weighs the same. The lightest element is hydrogen, but you'd never fing that in solid form. the least dense metal is lithium (although hydrogen would technically be a metal in solid form). The lightest non-metal is Boron.

Numnuts... a pound of anything weighs the same as a pound of anything else. A pound of lead weighs the same as a pound of styrofoam or a pound of air.
Go back to the drawing board.
