Whether a word is "bad" or not totally depends on the people around you. If you are with a strange group of people that think "vase" is a terrible word... then it is. These things are subjective - or a matter of popular opinion.

Do I think "Hell" is a bad word? No. Then again, I would feel uncomfortable if I had a 3-year old kid or kid sister... and she said "What the hell" or "Go to hell". It just feels wrong. Still, it's not a curse. It's just not always appropriate.

In fact, "Go to Hell", is a curse, in the most literal of terms. In the bible, when they speak of curses, they mean "wanting, or asking for terrible things to happen to a person". These days, curse words are words that get beeped on TV. The reason those words are given that special treatment is because for countless years, the only use for those words was to get under peoples skin, to get them annoyed, upset, or disgusted. Like in curses. These days, we can use those words for absolutely f$*%ing everything. See? Wasn't even wishing harm on anyone, or trying to upset or hex anyone, but the word illustrates my point colorfully. :)

The point is, there is a time and place where some things are ok, and some things aren't. Most people still feel that modern curse words shouldn't be used by everyone, and few people want their children to use that language. It is a matter of being respectful to other people. That is why it is wise to refrain from any profane words, until you are sure they are acceptable by all in your prescence.

No word is in and of itelf bad, is our conception of it that turns it into "bad"
In the last analysis, a word is merely a succession of acoustic impressions, that are then perceived, decoded and integrated according to labels we have acuqired in our life, labels that name an object or describe a concept or situation in particular. It is not the word but the meaning we put into it that can make it bad. this is like the ultimate unexplainable taboo of all. Hell is not a bad word, it merely describes a concept that is asociated with suffering and punishment. When you use antything against somebody causing these last two sensation it is actually JUDGED bad, but it doesn't mean it is.

Think: is a pillow good or bad? It can be good if you use it to rest your head, but then...does the pillow become an evil if used to suffocate a child to death??

No, the pillow is just the pillow, is the meaning you put into it that changes its value judgement. is not the pillow the "bad" but the action, that causes sorrow, that offends that hurts, that is "bad' in itself.

I don't think it should be considered a bad word. I mean it's like saying "What in the world?!?" but instead your saying hell. Or saying "Yeah, yesterday was hell!" What's wrong with that? Hells a bad place and if yesterday was bad what's wrong with saying that? But, telling someone to go to hell is different..that's when it's wrong in my opinion.

I don't think it is a bad word in itself, but it certainly used to shock people in former times and it is offensive to some people today. I think that it has the connotation of wishing the person one is speaking to to go to hell, but obviously that depends on the way it is used. If one has good manners, one moderates one's language so as not to give offence.

I personally think not....because people take it out of context.....they think it's bad..but it's not...hell is a place and only a place....if you say...geez...that place was a living hell...that is describing it to the actual place.....hell is a place of damnation for ever....so, it's like the best word to describe something miserable....children flip when they hear it....the word may be a little rude or something..so, of course parents don't want their children to say it....so, they don't and when they hear it they freak....that's my opinion....

No. Hell is not a bad word, it's just a bad place to be.

most of the 'bad' words became bad only because they were spoken by the masses while the ruling class used more 'refined' words. 'hell' literally means hole (related to Holland and other low places)

Some folks are just so uncreative, that's why. If you want to hear good cussing, visit a golf course on Sunday morning.

Well, as my sister's classmate once said:

"What's wrong with saying 'hell'? It's just a place, like McDonald's."
