Whatever you plan on doing, it will be a good idea to quit smoking inside of the house while you are going through the cleaning process. In 9 years alot of fabrics could be entrenched with the smell to the point where you might want to throw them out. Look for a few viable cleaning solutions that help rid the odor, also try keeping your home really ventilated so that clean air can flow in.

Painting and shampooing the carpets will get rid of MOST of the smell. After this, use a "febreze" like product (there are some that are specifically used for smoke), and go to town. This will get rid of the problem. It's relatively inexpensive (especially since you are selling the home) but not necessarily quick. It may take few days. As a wife to a smoker, this is probably the BEST way to go. Good luck.

Ideally you should shampoo carpets, clean all curtains and drapes, ditto on bedspreads and paint the whole house inside.

You might be able to get away with spraying everything with Febreze. You can buy it at the grocery or WalMart type store... and it's supposed to REMOVE odors (not just cover them up.)

Spray all carpets, upholstered furniture, draperies, curtains, bedspreads, anything thick and cloth or stuffed that would absorb odors. Consider smoking outside until house is sold... or getting an air filter/cleaner that will filter the cigarette smoke out, even if it means only smoking in the room where the filter is located.

Consider simmering potpourri or spices on the stovetop when you know the house will be shown. If they're showing it while you're at work, you can get an electric potpourri pot to simmer the scent safely while you're away. Most people think spices like cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon etc are pleasant and if you throw in a little citrus (like dried orange peel) then it's just "homey" and not overly floral (which some folks find disturbing.)

Good luck selling!

I am a smoker & it's funny because know one knows it when they come to my house. I use febreeze air freshener as well, & strategically place plug-in air-fresheners in the sockets. Every couple months, (NOW, for you) wash the walls with a mixture of spicn-span, baking soda & water. this REMOVES the nicotine buildup on the walls. Soak any mini blinds or levelors in the bathtub with the same mixture & very hot water. wash with sponge, & drip dry. Have your curtains cleaned, & make sure he only smokes in one room in the house if it is too cold to go outside, with the window open & blow the smoke outside. Have a potpourri cooker in that room at all times. Then spray with febreeze before showing the house. A potpourri simmering pot is always a good idea as previously suggested.

Have the carpets cleaned first off and wipe down all the walls with Lysol spray. Spray the furniture with Febreeze. THEN, put vanilla extract inside all the heating ducts and turn on the heater. It will warm up the vanilla and send the smell all the way through your house. Good luck!

yes there is. bo peep ammonia - if you can find it, there is a recipe on the back for a mixture to wash walls. I would do that or paint, wash curtains, get a carpet scrubber, a complete wash down will do the job. Its time consuming but inexpensive. Hope I helped!!

Air the place out. Scrub down all the walls and ceiling. Shampoo the carpet. Clean the air ducts. Clean or replace the air unit.
