Liberation is only the starting point in a so-called war of liberation. The Romans fought many such wars, not all under that name. They then found that it required occupation to consolidate the cities and countries which they had liberated. Much of the time their liberation was from the people themselves, who were liberated for the purpose of Rome.

In World War II, the Allies liberated Germany, France, and finally, the Philippines. In all three cases, often long and difficult occupations were necessary. The United States stayed in Germany and helped rebuild it, fed it through the Berlin Airlift, and is still there today, not as a conqueror but as allies. In the Philippines, we stayed militarily long enough to support the country, and were a factor in the island countries future until not too long ago. France had not suffered the kind of losses in infrastructure that Germany had, so our presence or role as liberator was not needed. Japan, too, in a lesser sense, was liberated by the United States. A democratic goverment was estabished which serves Japan today. American troops stayed in Japan for a relatively short time, but a U.S. Governor of Japan was the top official during the occupation.

In the current conflict in Iraq, the U.S. has attempted to limit its role as liberator to keep from seeming as if we would come and rule over the country. This has not necessarily worked well or been easy to do; as we attempt to build democracy in the country. Whether what is really a very bold experiment will work out exactly as intended or not we'll see, but it does seem in jeopardy. Yet, it is not over.

a war of liberation wouldn't have destroyed 1/2 the country. a war of liberation would have been if the iraqi people overthrew their own government not the good old USA blowing them back to the iron age and then wanting to charge the iraqi people (oil) for it.

Iraq was based on a lie and American troops are dying for nothing other than Bush's Oil.

Yes you are right the people of Iraq are mere animals who do not have the desire or ability to lead their own lives or have their own democracy. It is sickening to me the way liberals display their racism in such a paternalistic way. It is odd that racism is the first thing that lefties accuse conservatives of when they are losing a debate.

Go join the Klan, your sheet is waiting for you.

We should just nuke them, turn the sand to glass, and drill through it for the oil. That is why we are there anyway. Does it appear to you that the current administration gives a crap about the people, either there or here?

It's not about a "war on terror" or "fighting for freedoms". It's REALLY all about THIS!...

maybe they need liberated from us now? check statistics of how many died when saddam ruled compared to how many have died since under control of the US.

this ****** done pissed me off by emailing me and bitchin. what i meant was statistics according to time. sure more have died under saddam but he ruled for a while im talking percentages and averages. if you compared saddams rule to ours of iraq you would see that more have died under our rule. if we occupied iraq as long as he did then you would see how many die. maybe. maybe im just talkin ****. oh well.
