I am quite tired of it and I love your analogy.
I live in America, can't help it for now, I was born here. You are just seeing this drivel in Yahoo answers, we have to see it constantly from every forum imaginable. And then when the history books are printed you can bet we'll be the "hero's" once again.
And my concern is not, nor has ever been people coming into our country. My concern is this wall will keep Americans IN.
Those of us with any brain cells at all shudder at the horror of what we are doing and have done to other countries and to our own people.

The US = the police (not the band)
No one really likes the police as they consider the police to be in some form restricting their abilities to do "whatever" they want. However, when these people are in need of help, they call the police to solve their problems, many times which they were unable to control themselves.
These people mistrust the police because of a small percentage of incidents (and justly so) have disillusioned them from realizing that most cops are looking out for the best interests of those under their care.
Sometimes the police have to come in and physically do what others fear or are incapable of doing because they know that their tactics, while harsh, will get the job done.
The rest of the World looks at the US the same way. Everyone is looking to quickly judge our police status throughout the world, but the minute there is any sort of skirmish, issue, who do you want on your side: the US or the UN? I'll stick it out with a country that understands what freedom is, fought to get 200+ years ago and isnt afraid to continue that fight, even if it includes getting the pushers (Bin Laden, Hussein, etc.) off of the streets.
Are you really ignorant to believe that the people of Iraq would be in a better situation if Saddam was still in power?
So assuming that you're European, the next time some upstart, rogue country attempts to dictate to your free country what you can and can not do, we will be there because no matter how much you hate the police, the police will get the job done!
As for the issue of immigration, we have the World's longest border that is not monitored by the military. We have bent over backwards (NAFTA) and sacrificed good paying jobs to help corporations keep afloat by allowing them to move industries to Mexico. Now that we are trying to limit; not stop, but limit the influx of immigrants, we are being harassed for this as well.
It is sad to see that jealousy has clouded the eyes of the world.
