I think collies and sheperds are really smart dogs. They are very easy to train.

In no particular order:
Border Collie
Poodle
German Shepherd
Golden Retriever
Doberman Pinscher
On the flip side, the least intelligent dog breeds are believed to be:
Borzoi
Chow Chow
Bulldog
Basenji
Afgan Hound - being at the bottom of the list.

Don't blame me - see the link below. If you want my PERSONAL opinion, I would have to say it is the dog with so many mixes that no one breed can be distinguished.

There are so many, and individual mileage may vary.

SOME wicked smart dogs are border collies and jack russell terriers. In fact they are too smart for many people. You really have to think up things for them to do otherwise they will out think you and come up with their own jobs. Usually you won't like them.

As for general "brains" many dogs are way up there on the IQ scale. It's really hard to rank them though, since different dogs are bred for different things. German Shepherds are good multipurpose dogs, orginially bred for herding sheeo and now used for police work, guarding, search and rescue, etc. Does that make them smarter, than say, Great Pyranese, bred for guarding sheep pastures? Who can say?

But pretty much everybody will tell you that Border collies and JRTs are at the top of the intelligence list.
