After a spay for example...?

I am sorry your pup seems to be in pain. It's best however, to see the DVM regarding what's appropriate for your dog. There are several reasons why.

Your dog could be having a surgical complication. What may appear to be pain, could be bleeding into the abdomen, or something equally uncommon, yet horriffic.

Please do not give aspirin. It is only given to dogs under very specific circumstances and the pet is always closely monitored on it. Never is it to be given following surgery, as it is a bloodthinner.

OTC pain killers are not a wise option unless your pet is being closely monitored by the doctor. If they were suitable for dogs, there wouldn't be much need for veterinarians.

Benedryl is an anti- inflammatory, not used for pain. The typical dosages is 1mg/lb., but, once again, only your vet can tell you if it's a good choice for your dog.

Many different breeds have physical make-ups that makes them sensitive to many meds. "Smashed nose" breeds like pugs and bulldogs already have respiratory issues, so you may not give them the same drugs as a retriever or a terrier. Also, your vet will know if your dog has any other pre-existing conditions that should be considered when choosing medication.

Good Luck!:)

Lovemypup gave you the address for otc meds and it gives dosages by the weight of the animal.
Do not give asprin to a dog that has just had surgery. Asprin is a blood thinner and you do not want to interfer with clotting after a surgery. Better to get pain meds from a vet in that case.

NO NO NO
Benedryl is not for pain it can safely be given to dog but is used for allergic reactions not pain.
And NEVER advill it is toxic to dogs.
Asprin yes but not after a spay as it thins the blood and could casue bleeding.
Talk to your vet if you feel the dog needs pain meds after being spayed. Most are not that uncomfortable and do not need pain meds.

Yes you can, but the vet usually gives them a shot of pain meds before they go home. Most dogs generally don't need anything else besides this. Here's a site that has the dog dosages of common meds, but I'd still contact a vet just to make sure of the dosage for your dog.

Depending on the circumstances you may not want them to have pain killers. If they feel fine they are more likely to run around and split their sutures after a surgery. Or if they are hurt in an accident you won't know if there are serious but not easily noticable injuries if they are doped up to feel good. In cases when they should get something they can have aspirin but ask a vet for the dose.

My doctor told us to give our dogs 2 Benadryl everyday because of her excessive licking problem. So, yes, some vets might recommend human medication for dogs. However, before you do anything like that you should take your dog to the vet and get a proper examination and suggestions for treatment and medication dosage.

if your vet was worth the money you threw down for the spay she should have been sent home with a medication specifically for dogs, like deramaxx or rimadyl. dogs CAN take asprin but it's usually ineffective and can cause stomach upset and ulcers. call your vet pronto to see what they recomend or how much asprin to give :)

My dog had to have surgery not too long ago, and after we ran out of the pain medication, we gave him a small dosage of children's Tylenol to help with his pain. It seemed to help him out some. I hope this helps!

Benedryl is fine. Advil is extremely bad for them. Some of our pain meds kills them, it shuts down their kidneys.
