I am seriously wondering about that horrible toxic black mould that so many people are talking about. My bathroom is in serious need of renovating (just have to get around to it...$$$) anyway, for the past few months I have noticed this spotty black mould appearing here and there. It is on the caulking, the celing, around the glass doors, creeping in between the tiles. I clean regularly and have gone as far as spraying and scrubbing it with pure clorine bleach but it always comes back.
Does anyone know how I can find out if it is the toxic mould and what the symptoms are when a human gets sick from it?
I really am becoming concerned...and frusterated...it is UGLY!!!

From Start Remodeling:

"most active mold colonies appear greenish to black (typical of mold growing on bathroom tile grout) in color"

Also:

"Stachybotrys Chartarum, Penicillium and Aspergillus – Toxic, Health threatening molds, found in homes, businesses and schools near you. These molds can be found anywhere that dark and dank conditions permit them to grow. "

There is a difference between the standard mold you find on your grout and ceilings (see above) and toxic black mold (see 2nd paragraph) which likes to live in the dark. So don't jump to conclusions, yet. Check the site below for full information and a free pamphlet to help you make an informed decision. Also, there is a link for a mold test kit, as mentioned in an above posting.

Good luck!

There are several types of black molds....the more serious type being "stachybotrys". It's the toxic one that causes serious respiratory infections. You can buy a test kit to determine the type of mold you have. (in stores or on internet)

"black" colored molds are common to bathrooms because of the high humidity. To get rid of them, bleach is a great answer. If they keep coming back, you need to do something to lower the humidity/moisture levels. That could involve installing an exhaust fan if you don't have one. Other remedies include wiping down your shower/bath stall after bathing to remove the water, or spraying them with commercial products that "dry" up excess moisture. Also, if the water has seeped through and got your drywall/plaster walls damp, you may need to totally replace them to rid the infestation.

I would have the State Health Dept come over to test the mold. Odds are it's not toxic black mold, however you can't be to careful.
Symptoms are very similar to the common cold. Severe reactions include seizures and anaphalaxis

If it was the toxic mould you would be dead by now,try scrubbing with a vinegar salution, that usually kills mould.

Clorox kills mold & at the hardware store they have this kit <$25>that you can put in your bathroom that will suck up the moisture and prevent more mold.

Call your local county environmental health office. They'll be able to check it out. Good luck!
