Wait a couple of weeks if the feeling is still the same then it's real love. It also depends on your age.

Do what you feel in your soul. Your inner light will guide you. There are a few signs that may lead you in finding out. If you can't stop thinking about that other person. If every second you spend together fells like eternity. If you're down or in trouble, you think of him/her. Infatuation and/or illusions fade in time, and quite drastically, love is perpetual and unrelenting. You can be sure of the difference between true love and infatuation/illusions, because while in love thoughts/dreams/ideas/motivations to do things for the other person come without intense or specific thought. It is different when it is illusions/infatuation, you have a consistent mental motivation to please/satisfy/earn the attention of the other person. Basically, love is a sub-conscience motivation, where infatuation/illusion is conscience and most of the time mentally overwhelming.

I think you need to evaluate the situation! How long have you known this individual, what do they feel, do they know you, what do you feel like you want from this love and this person? I feel the last question is really important. Are you looking for something, or did it just come and strike you? What do you love about this person, it is trivial, material or vain? If it is an illusion, you would not be able to foresee a future with this person, you would be caught in the moment and not know why? If it is infatuation, your love would not really be based in anything meaningful, but trivial or vain. Good luck, I feel like it needs to be explored, love can be a tricky-biatch.

Real love is when you have feelings for someone because of WHO they are on the INSIDE. Real love needs time to work and develope. You have to become friends with this "person" and get to know them more. Overcome your shyness. If you are friends with this person, you should tell them how you feel about them. It is good to let your feelings out instead of holding them inside. Tell the person you love how you feel about them so that you can get them, before someone else does.
Most importantly, always remeber that the greatest love that you'll ever have is the one inside of you.

Good question, I'm also shy. [But probably for different reasons.] anyway, hang around with the girl/guy and see how they act. Body language is everything.
Good luck!
