2)I want to stay for about 5 months. am i right to think tht i can book a normal flight (2 weeks etc) Then pay a small fee to change this flight? are there any limitations on this or is there a way i can just book an open ticket to start with? Thanks

Where are you starting from? Get a round the world fare on Air New Zealand London-Auckland-London with stopovers currently £669

How old are you, and are you a student? You may be able to use a company like STA Travel which provides cheap flights to young people and students and allows flexible scheduling for 1-year. Normal tickets will vary with rules for changes, the more 'open' the ticket the more expensive it will be. Are you planning to work there? If you are under 30 and from the USA or Canada, go to:

They can help you get a work permit and book a flexible, cheap ticket.

Depends where you are flying from. be careful with the tickets & read the fine print as they can hit you with a huge fee for changing the ticket. I would just do an on-line search & compare deals, then contact the supplier directly.

Trailfinders.com is your best bet. I used them when i travelled to newzealand and they were ace... easy to rebook your flights too, so if you like it in new zealand (which you will) then you can ring them and get a later flight! Enjoy your trip you lucky bugger!
