The largest electric motors that I know of are on submarines and the largest one I am sure of is 5,000KW. I suspect that there are larger ones out there also.

I can easily believe that the largest are on submarines. But the motors which drive the pumps lifting oil out of some deep wells (ESPs for short) must come a close second, going up to 3,000 horsepower (that's about 2300 kW).

I have read about a 430,000 HP motor being dismantled for scrap. There are pictures of it on the web. It was 58' diameter

I have never seen, or needed, anything large.
In terms of were it's used I use them on a large cut-off saw used in foundry's. I'm sure there are many other places they can be used but since I make saws that's all I can tell you.
