Actually, this is not true.
When a man or woman announces divorce, they are no longer joined by the bonds of marriage. However if a man divorces his wife, he is financially responsible for her for three months or for three menstrual cycles. This is to ensure 1. that she is not pregnant, and 2. that she have time to arrange herself rather than be thrust out of the house with nowhere to live, nothing to eat, and lost as to where to begin. Usually in an Islamic marriage contract, an agreed upon alimony is included in the case that the couple ever get divorced. The husband would also have to pay this ammount, excluded from the three months of taking care of her. In the case that the wife divorce the husband, she is to pay him whatever is remaining from her dowry if there is any, then part ways.
If the couple decide that they made a mistake and want to work things out, then it is best that they work through their troubles and marry again. This may happen three times. After the third divorce, they cannot remarry unless the wife marrys another man and has become divorced from him. This does NOT mean that she sleeps with some guy, nor that she marries him for a night, sleeps with him, then divorces him the next day. It is a legitimate marriage, lasting any length a normal marriage would last before the couple find that divorce is the better option. If they've already divorced three times, then it is obvious that things are not going to work out. Then again perhaps they are using divorce as a means of annoyance, to "get back" at the other partner. It happens. Throwing in this rule sets limits to how far they go and to make them realize marriage is a serious matter, not to be thrown around as jokes or taken lightheartedly.
And to suresh above me, it IS a woman's right to divorce her husband, it is not a men only rule.

But if a man divorces his wife a third time, she is not lawful for him after that until she has married another husband. Then if he divorces her, there is nothing wrong in the original couple getting back together provided they think they will remain within Allah's limits. These are Allah's limits which he has made clear to people who know. (2:230)

Yes, i knew that! It is to ensure that the man does not just utter the words in a fit of rage but are coming from conscious thought! Once he says so the women has to marry someone else, they cannot get remarried straightaway if they decide to do so. Then if she gets divorced from the second one they can get married again. A woman does not have the right to divorce it is only the mans prerogative. Though muslims will cite this as the protection of rights of women in islam.

First of all Marriage is a serious matter in Islam. You can't just marry and divorce and marry again (Or stay married and have plenty of mistresses around).
It's untrue that you have to sleep at least one night with somebody to get back! The rule is that you cannot get back after you are divorced, unless after you have married and divorced from someone else.

nope the "one night" part is totally false. people think that they can cheat God.
she has to MARRY someone else, a true marriage with the intention of living together as a married couple. not for a day or two then get a divorce.
